Is it worth digitising old VHS tapes?
Usually yes, and sooner rather than later. VHS tape degrades every year it sits unused, the oxide coating breaks down and the picture gets worse. A tape that plays today with mild noise can be unplayable in a few years, and once the picture is lost it cannot be recovered. Digitising stops the decline and gives you a copy that will not age.
What happens if part of the tape is damaged or worn?
We play the tape through in full rather than skipping to the parts that work, so you keep the whole recording. Damaged sections are captured as well as the deck allows and we tell you where the dropouts are, so you know exactly which parts may need repair work or a second pass.
What format do I get the files in?
Video is delivered as standard MP4 files that play on any phone, laptop, television or streaming platform, which is what people usually want for family footage. We can also supply other formats on request. You get your own copy, and we keep a master so we can redo or re-encode later if you need a different format.
Can you transfer records and cassettes as well as video?
Yes. Vinyl records, audio cassettes, reel-to-reel and spoken-word tapes are all part of the service, along with photo and slide scanning. Tell us what you have and we will confirm what is possible before you bring it in.
How much does digitisation cost?
It depends on the format, the length and how many items you have, so we quote per job rather than publish a price list. You get a written quote before any work is booked in. Call 081 015 0573 or WhatsApp us with what you have and roughly how much there is.
Do you keep or take the original tape?
Your original comes straight back to you, untouched. We only ever read from the tape or record, so the physical item is never modified or written to.
Do you also set up livestreams?
Yes. We set up and optimise streaming for content creators, gamers and DJs, covering audio and video configuration and platform setup for YouTube, Twitch and Facebook Live.
Can you digitise something my old player will no longer play?
Often, yes. Because we play through the whole tape and work on the signal, we can usually recover recordings from decks and tapes that a normal home setup would skip. Bring it in and we will assess it before quoting.
Which formats do you transfer to?
Video comes as MP4 or MKV. MP4 plays on any phone, laptop, smart TV or streaming platform with no setup, so it is the usual choice for family footage. MKV holds more of the original quality in one file and handles multiple audio tracks and subtitles, so it suits archiving and is often supplied alongside an MP4. Audio comes as FLAC, MP3 or WAV. FLAC is lossless and about half the size of WAV, MP3 is small and plays everywhere, and WAV is completely untouched by the transfer. Tell us what you want to do with the files and we will recommend the right format.
What does the AI-assisted cleanup actually do?
It reduces the grain, tracking noise, tape hiss and flutter that make old recordings hard to watch, and it can stabilise shaky camcorder footage and lift faded colour and contrast. It is restoration, not magic — it cannot invent detail that was never recorded, and badly damaged tape has hard limits. We show you a test section first so you can judge the result before deciding.
Do you edit the footage as well?
Yes. We can trim dead air and the boring parts, cut a long tape into separate chapters, join clips into a single film, and add titles, music and transitions. We can also letterbox widescreen footage so it fills a modern screen instead of leaving black bars down the sides.
